Touring the Dam

Nevada's Hoover Dam (August 2016)

When travelling to Vegas touring Hoover Dam and Lake Mead is a must. Located in Boulder City, Nevada (30 miles from Las Vegas), lies a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. Pictured above is the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Memorial Bridge which protects the border between Arizona and Nevada.

Hoover Dam Power Plant
The power plant protects the dam by supplying hydroelectric power and flood control.

Construction to build the dam started in 1933. Prompted by the Great Depression thousands of men left their homes promised employment. Over 100 reported deaths were caused by falling objects and heat exhaustion (119 degrees Fahrenheit / 48 degrees Celsius).

All Aboard the Desert Princess

The Desert Princess is a three-level paddle-wheeler that holds 275 passengers. Part 2 of my day trip to Boulder City was touring Lake Mead, the highest reservoir in the United States.

Lake Mead River Cruise (August 2016)

A sunny breeze accompanied by beautiful scenery. This 90 minute sightseeing cruise passes landmarks like the Fortification Hill (an extinct volcano), the Arizona Paint Pots, and the Hoover Dam standing at 726 feet high and 660 feet wide. Note the white ring mark around the shores. Water levels have dropped due to the draught and now sits at its lowest point since it started being filled in the 1930s.

Hemenway Park

On our way back we stopped at Hemenway Park to see a group of Desert Bighorn Sheep. Their most evident feature is their large curled brown horns.
